Cow’s Milk Protein Allergy
Is your baby experiencing abnormal symptoms after each feeding? You have the right to be worried, as these symptoms may indicate the presence of a milk allergy…
Milk allergy is an abnormal response of the immune system that considers cow’s milk proteins found in food to be harmful. The presence of these proteins can “sensitize” the immune system.
Milk allergy is the most common type of food allergy in infants and children. It can occur in infants who are formula fed or breast-fed.

Patient Testimonial
Symptoms of milk allergy in infants can appear immediately after feeding or can be delayed for a few days. If immediate symptoms such as swollen lips or difficulty breathing appear, seek immediate medical help.
The following symptoms are common in case of milk allergy in infants, especially if they are accompanied by restless sleep or excessive crying:
- Constipation
- Reflux
- Vomiting
- Refusing food
- Colic
- Diarrhea
- Wheezing
- Eczema
If milk allergy is confirmed, you will be asked to remove milk and dairy products (such as yogurt, cheese, etc.) from your child’s diet. If your baby is breastfed, you will be asked to eliminate cow’s milk sources from your diet as well for a specified period.
If your baby is formula-fed, you will be asked to switch to an extensively hydrolyzed formula. In this type of formula, long cow milk protein chains have been broken down into a suitable weight and length that the body can absorb and assimilate without sensitizing the immune system.
According to international recommendations, it is very important to ensure that a child with milk allergy is not exposed to cow’s milk proteins found in breast milk substitutes in general. In this case, the baby should be given a milk formula with extensively hydrolyzed proteins, or a formula based on free amino acids.
It is not recommended to use milk formulas with partially hydrolyzed proteins and formulas based on other mammalian milks, such as sheep or goat milk, because these formulas still cause an immune reaction and thus worsen the symptoms.
