Cow’s Milk Protein Allergy (CMPA)

Is your baby having abnormal reactions after each feeding? You have the right to be concerned as such manifestations could indicate an allergic reaction to cow’s milk proteins …

Cow’s milk protein allergy (CMPA) is an unusual response by the body’s immune system in which cow’s milk proteins present in a food are recognised as a potential “threat”. This can cause the immune system to be ‘sensitised’.

Cow’s Milk Allergy is the most common food allergy in infants and young children. It can occur in formula-fed or breastfed infants.

Symptoms can occur immediately after feeding in which case you will need to seek immediate medical advice or can be delayed for up to a couple of days later. In the case of immediate symptoms such as swelling of the lips or the tongue or breathing difficulties, immediate medical help must be sought.

So what are the potential symptoms that you should look out for?
The following symptoms are typical of delayed Cow’s Milk Allergy, especially if accompanied by restless sleep or excessive crying:

  • Back arching
  • Constipation
  • Reflux
  • Vomiting
  • Refusal to feed
  • Colic
  • Diarrhea
  • Wheezing
  • Eczema

If CMPA is confirmed, you will be asked to eliminate milk and dairy products (such as yogurt, cheese etc. …) from your baby’s diet. If you are breastfeeding, you will be advised to eliminate cow’s milk from you own diet as well.

If you are formula feeding, you will probably be asked to switch your baby’s regular formula to an extensively hydrolyzed formula. In this type of formula, long proteins chains have been broken into an adequate weight and length that the body can absorb and assimilate without awaking the immune system.
